How to Measure Yarn Using the Wraps Per Inch Method

What is the Wraps Per Inch Method?

Yarn thickness is commonly measured by Wraps Per Inch (WPI) to determine what weight category a yarn fits into.

By measuring how many strands of yarn (wraps) fit in a 1” space, you can discover what weight any yarn is. The more times you have to wrap the yarn to fill in 1”, the thinner the yarn is.

You’ll find a guide of common yarn weights on the tool for quick-reference.
